Description:

JOHNNY ECK
(1911 - 1991) American freak show performer born with the appearance that he was missing the lower half of his torso. Eck is best known today for his role in Tod Browning's 1932 cult classic film, Freaks. He was often billed as the amazing "Half-Boy" and "King of the Freaks". Rare original captioned diagram signed in block letters within, 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d., likely Chicago, 1933]. Eck has drawn a schematic view of ten stages surrounding an area labeled "EXHIBITS" an beneath he has added the location "RIPLEY ODDITORIUM" (which first opened at the Chicago World's Fair in 1933). He also lists the acts to appear on each stage: he places himself on Stage 6, with the other acts to include: "Adremo, sword swallower...Freida Pushnick [Pushnick als had no body beneath the waist], Andrew Gawley...Torture Act...Fire Act...Man That Grows...Anatomical Wonder...". Fine condition. We suppose the "exhibits" were preserved medical specimens, three-headed calves, and so on.
