(1723 - 1794) American clergyman and Signer of the Declaration of Independence, he also was one of the organizers of the Presbyterian Church along national lines and moderated the church's first General Assembly. Very rare and fine association A.D.S. "Jno. Witherspoon", 1p. 5 1/2" x 4", Princeton, Dec. 10, 1773 to Jonathan Sergeant, "Treasurer to the College at Princeton". Witherspoon instructs: "...At ten Days Sight please to pay to the Order of Robert Stockton thirty two pounds ten shillings and eight pence halfpenny & place the Same to my Acct..." Also signed by Stockton at bottom, acknowledging receipt of the sum. Expert repair to a split on verso, some show-through at upper-right of text on verso, else very good. Expertly inlaid. ROBERT STOCKTON (1764-1828) was the son of fellow New Jersey Signer Richard Stockton. He would serve as a Representative U.S. House of Representatives and was the first U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey. He also ran unsuccessfully for vice president in the 1820 election as a member of the Federalist Party, which did not nominate a candidate for president. Sold by Walter Benjamin Autographs ca. late 1960s. Witherspoon was serving as president of the college at the time.
