JOHN WAYNE GACY ARCHIVE WITH EXPLICIT RECORDINGS
(1942 - 1994) Notorious mass murderer of over thirty young men whom he buried beneath his home, executed after many appeals and postponements. A fascinating archive of material relative to the posthumous publication of Gacy's autobiography ‘A Question of Doubt' (Los Angeles: Craig Bowley Consultants, 1995), including two original 90-minute cassette tapes with a graphic interview with Gacy just days before his execution in preparation for the publication of his work. This archive includes numerous copies and facsimiles of legal documents between Gacy's publisher James Taranto and his lawyer John Greenlees, as well as a copy of the original 216pp. typed manuscript of the book. Additionally, there are pages of material related to the copyright, ownership and release of dozens of Gacy's prison artwork to James Taranto for an exhibition opening in Los Angeles, November 26, 1993, photocopies of several manifestos and philosophical musings, a photocopy of a sketch analogizing the Republican party to a condom, signed; photocopies of letters and legal documents on his personal letterhead reading ‘Execution…Revenge for a Sick Society' and ‘Execute Justice…Not People!', and several other signed incidentals. Gacy, ever an egotist and a hustler, monetized his persona and reputation perhaps more than any other serial killer, corresponding with thousands of fans, exhibiting and selling his prison artwork for substantial sums, and even setting up a commercial ‘900' number for the curious to speak directly with this notorious mass murderer! Gacy maintained his innocence up to the day of his execution and never wavered from the claim that he nothing more than a sacrificial lamb of the political and legal systems. The tapes included in this archive reveal this conviction profoundly: speaking rapid-fire but clearly and extremely candidly with numerous expletives which have been ‘bleeped' out on the tape, Gacy gives a lengthy narrative of his life and case, starting as a teenager arriving in Las Vegas in the 1960s. He initially lived with his cousin, a call girl who was somehow found beheaded, and got a job as an ambulance driver: ‘…We used to make the run out to Henderson…It was 23 miles…I remember we had to go out there once. Some f-cking a—hole got drunk and went over the edge…They found out I wasn't 21 and I was let go…'. Gacy also discusses his children, one of whom he vaingloriously describes as having been conceived ‘…right there in North Las Vegas…at the Shamrock Center…And I banged her [mother] over at Palm Mortuary…'. He also discusses his religious beliefs, in very small part: ‘…I was raised a Catholic. Then I started going to Jewish services. What people don't understand is how you can claim what true religion is. If the Bible is supposed to be the book that everyone is following, and then you come up with 2,000 versions of the Bible, who in the hell do you believe? I believe in the Man…I talk to Him…He's been with me all the way through it…My faith kept me going because I could have given up a long time ago'. Gacy also goes into great detail about his sexual proclivities, in very small part: ‘…I am not a homosexual. Yes, I'm bisexual. Male and female go down on me and I've banged both of them in the butt…I've had two wives. My wife will tell you the way I went…I was engaged twice more. Both of the marriages I killed off myself. And yet her and I are still friends…I've never been insecure about who I am. People can draw their own conclusion or judgmental decision on me, but I know who I am…'. Throughout the lengthy interview, Gacy talks about working and brags about his work ethic: ‘…I worked with the business. I would take $1500-1000 jobs...you do what you have to do…I remember I had a foreman who gave me a job to do…I'll be there…I be here 8 o'clock in the morning…I'll be there with the equipment…to put the ceramic tile on…I can do both jobs at once…and sure enough I make $56,000 dollars…'. Much more of the content revolves around Gacy's opinion of and experiences in the legal system, in extremely small part: ‘…They just want me to go quietly…I had court-appointed attorneys until last year…My attorney sold me out with an insanity defense…if I'm going to kill someone I'd rather kill 33 lawyers. Between them and the media, I don't know which one is first. Every time something happens they have my f-cking name in the paper…William Kunkel, the prosecutor, who would he have been without John Gacy?...I've had to deal with politics my whole life…Too many careers and too much money have been made off my name…I'm the only one they want to die for it in Illinois…They want me to pay $141,000 in back rent [for his imprisonment]. There are 29,600 prisoners in Illinois and I'm the only one they want to charge room and board. That's bullsh-t…They're scared to death of me now…the field day has a f-cking field day with me…I'm not going to worry about it. I won't believe it until they put the God damned needle in my arm…'. Gacy also brags about the money his artwork commands, in small part: ‘…I did a painting of the Pieta that sold for $5,000 three or four years ago…Stephen King has one of my paintings…I do artwork for Columbia and Sony. I get mad at these cocks-ckers who criticize my artwork…They look at me as the number one prison artist. Everybody and their f-cking brother is doing art. My art is really going up with my impending execution next month…'. There is also a portion of the tape which tapes Gacy's conversations with other individuals who have called him ‘collect' and talk to him, saying: ‘…you feel like you've known [Gacy] your entire life...'. Much, much more! Condition of tapes is moderately good, but both could benefit from careful cleaning. A disturbing and revealing look into the mind of Gacy in his final days, worthy of full transcription and further research.
