JOHN WAKEFIELD FRANCIS(1789-1861) American physician who studied medicine with David Hosack, becoming the first graduate of The College of Physicians and Surgeons, 1811. Along with Hosack, both would become the first American surgeons to use the stethoscope. Fine content A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., New York, Aug. 2, 1851 to a Mr. Flint, in part: "...Your generous manifestation was duly received with its philosophical exposition. Thank you doubly for all: were all our patients like you and the precious Wm. S. we would become 'nabors'. Will you allow me to request of you the life of Southy...the present specimen of a literary character that centuries have produced. I was personally well acquainted with...and I love his qualities, and think his memory. Every one told me the book is precious to all intellects...". With a third person A.N.S. signed in text, 1p. 8vo., May 24, [1850], declining an invitation due to previous commitments. Two pieces, very good.
