JOHN W. HOFMANN
(1824-1902) Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A pre-war member of the famed Washington Grays militia artillery unit, he enlisted in the Union Army only days after the war began, and was commissioned captain in command of Company E, 23rd Pennsylvania (three-month) Volunteer Infantry on April 21, 1861. He was in command of his regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg, where it was one of the first Union infantry regiments to relieve the beleaguered Union cavalry on the opening day of the engagement. At 10:20 AM on July 1, 1863, he ordered his unit of only 282 men to open fire on advancing North Carolina troops. Here our division bivouaced on the morning of June 30th, 1863. Excepting the bi-monthly ‘muster of pay,' and standing to arms to resist an expected attack, the day and following night were quiet. Next morning, at about eight o'clock, the brigade – consisting of the Seventy-Sixth New York, Fifty-Sixth Pennsylvania, One Hundred and Forty Seventh New York…When about two miles from the town, the column was halted for a short time. I then noticed General Reynolds dismounted at the side of the road, and examining what appeared to be a large county map. It was the last time that I saw him. Ere another hour had passed, he had sacrificed his life upon the alter of his country. As we neared the town, shells bursting in the air, indicated that our cavalry, under the gallant Buford, were checking the enemy on the road coming east through the gap in the mountain at Cashtown…'.
