Description:

JOHN TYLER
(1790 - 1862) Tenth President of the United States following the death of Harrison, annexed Texas, and remained loyal to Virginia following its secession. Good content A.L.S. "John Tyler", 1p. 8vo., Sherwood Forest, Apr. 6, 1852 to James S. Whitney. In part: "...Your letter requesting...my inclinations...on the subject of intervention, has been duly received..." Tyler further states that he has no concerns one way or another whether his comments may be published, but leaves the decision to Whitney's "Society". He also asks that his comments be shown to his son, Robert Tyler, for his comments as well. Some toning about the signature from prior framing, old marginal tape stains and one in the body affecting three words, otherwise very good. From Feb. 3-12, 1852 (and twice again, later), Marines were landed and maintained in Buenos Aires to protect American interests. Such "interventions" occurred almost every year following the Mexican War.
