Description:

(1790 - 1862) Tenth President of the United States following the death of Harrison, annexed Texas, and remained loyal to Virginia following its secession. Scarce franking signature 'J. Tyler' as U.S. Senator on an envelope hand-addressed by him to 'Duff Green', adding 'U.S.S' beneath. Very good. DUFF GREEN (1791-1875) was an American politician and journalist whose publication 'The United States Telegraph' became the principal organ of Andrew Jackson's backers, helping him defeat John Quincy Adams in the presidential election of 1828. In 1841 to 1843, he was in Europe on behalf of the administration of President John Tyler and was instrumental in the boundary dispute between Maine and Canada. Notoriously, his berating of Abraham Lincoln towards the end of the Civil War caused the usually level-headed Lincoln to erupt into anger, calling Green a '...political tramp, miserable impostor, vile intruder, a political hyena...', then adding: '...You talk of the North cutting the throats of the Southern people. You have all cut your own throats, and, unfortunately, have cut many of those of the North...'
