JOHN TYLER
(1790 - 1862) Tenth President of the United States following the death of Harrison, annexed Texas, and remained loyal to Virginia following its secession. Scarce partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio, Washington, Feb. 1, 1842, an appointment of Joseph P. Taylor as "...Assistant Commissary General of Subsistence with the rank of Lieutenant..." Countersigned by JOHN C. SPENCER as Secretary of War. The brother of Zachary Taylor, Joseph Pannel Taylor served in both the War of 1812 as well as the Mexican War, where he was brevetted colonel for his services during the latter. At the opening of the Civil War, he held the rank of Brigadier General in the commissary department. Usual folds, light toning, else very good condition. From the B. T. Fredericks Collection.
