Description:

(1790 - 1862) Tenth President of the United States following the death of Harrison, annexed Texas, and remained loyal to Virginia following its secession. Fine content A.L.S. "J. Tyler" as President, 1p. 8vo., [Washington], Aug. 16 [n.y., but 1844], to Florida Territorial Gov. John Branch, staying at "Fullers Hotel", later to become the Willard Hotel in Washington. In part: "Serious complaints are made by the Judge agst Dorr the Marshall of W. Florida. [?] is recommended. What say you?..." Very good. Branch was Territorial Governor from only August 11, 1844 to June 25, 1845, therefore this letter could only have been written on Aug. 16, 1844 - while Tyler was president. Tyler had appointed Ebenezer Dorr IV three years earlier. In July, 1844, he became involved in the trial of Captain Jonathan Walker (1799-1878), who aided the escape of seven Pensacola slaves, for which he was imprisoned in the city's dungeon. Dorr personally branded Walker's hand "SS" (for "slave stealer"). No doubt Tyler was being attacked by abolitionists for his appointment of Dorr.
