Description:

JOHN TYLER
(1790 - 1862) Tenth President of the United States following the death of Harrison, annexed Texas, and remained loyal to Virginia following its secession. Partial A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Washington, Dec. 17, 1833, the conclusion of a letter to his son, in part: "...as you grow older you will more and more see the...necessity of economy, which can only be practised [sc] by denying yourself what is not necessary. As to your joining other classes do what Mr. Brown may advise - I will willingly pay any expense you may incur in that way, but be sure not to overtask yourself. Whatever you undertaken, do well and thoroughly, you must enter with Mr. Brown in February. He writes me a favorable account of you...". Signed "Yr Father John Tyler". Apparently penned on the verso of another letter and somewhat crudely affixed to a stiff sheet in three pieces, good.
