Description:

JOHN T. MORGAN
(1824 - 1907) Confederate brigadier general of the 51st Alabama, he fought at Bull Run and Chickamauga, and harassed Sherman from Atlanta to Savannah. Fine content A.L.S. "Jno. T. Morgan Brig. Genl", 3pp. 8vo., "Camp near Marietta", June 8, 1864 to Col. Isaac W. Avery, 4th Georgia Infantry critically wounded at New Hope Church in May, 1864. Morgan seeks a witness to defend himself against charges of being intoxicated during the Battle of Tanner's Ferry (or Lay's Ferry, Ga.) on May 15, 1864, a decisive part of the Battle of Resaca. In part: "...I am in arrest by order of Genl. Martin. The charges have not been preferred but...he alluded to my condition at the fight at Tanner's ferry and said I was accused of being intoxicated there...we were together during the whole time of that affair...I trust you will in consideration of the great suffering this arrest has cost me...give me a statement of what was your opinion of my condition at that time, Whether I was under the influence of liquor sufficiently to impair my powers of concentration or capacity to dispose properly of my troops...I did not seek to use this statement to forestall an investigation...merely to secure what I know will be a just & impartial statement of the facts...to be used in case of my death or yours in my vindication...[I] place a high value on my character at least for the sake of my wife& children...I am in the most painful suspense and in deep distress at what I conceive to be a harsh and unjust step...". Small loss at corner affects two letters of text, some show-through of ink, else very good. On May 15, the Battle of Resaca continued with no advantage to either side until Sherman sent a force across the Oostanaula River, at Tanner's Ferry, using newly delivered pontoon bridges and advanced towards Johnston's railroad supply line. Unable to halt this Union turning movement, Johnston was forced to retire.
