(1740 - 1795) American Revolution major general captured at Long Island and exchanged, he later wintered at Valley Forge, and was abandoned by D'Estaing to face the British at Newport. Rare, war-date L.S. as major general, 1p. 4to., Providence, Jan. 4, 1779 to Paymaster General Benjamin Steele. In part: "...Pay Mr. Nathaniel Norton Forage Master General of the Department Twenty Pounds Seventeen Shillings...for his Subsistence while Assistant Waggon Master...as specified in the annexed Abstract , and this shall be sufficient Warrant...". The verso bears an A.D.S. signed twice by Norton setting forth his dates of service and expenses while wagon master. Scattered foxing else very good. At this time, Sullivan was commanding all troops in Rhode Island, and would a few months hence embark on the "Sullivan Expedition" against Tories and Iroquois in western New York. Nathaniel Norton was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in November, 1776 and transferred to the 4th New York Regiment . He participated in the Saratoga campaign, and after the tortuous winter at Morristown, he was appointed a captain on April 23, 1778 and assumed command of a detachment of artillery with which he distinguished himself at the battle of Monmouth Courthouse. After a long and weary campaign against the Indians with Generals Sullivan and Clinton in 1779, his Regiment was detached to the Hudson Highlands.
