JOHN SULLIVAN
(1740 - 1795) American Revolution major general captured at Long Island and exchanged, he later wintered at Valley Forge, and was abandoned by D'Estaing to face the British at Newport. Early war-date A.L.S. "Jno Sullivan B Genl" 1p. oblong 12mo., [Cambridge], Aug. 1, 1775 ordering that "The Forces on Winter Hill are in want of Six Trucks or Shieves[?] & of about Thirty Fathom of Cordage about 2 Quarters of on such Diameter. The persons appointed for the purpose of Supplying the army are Desired to Furnish the Same". Endorsed on the verso by one James Rogers noting the receipt of "30 fathom Cordage". Usual folds, light soiling, else fine condition.
