JOHN SHAW BILLINGS
(1838 - 1919) Union colonel and physician, served at Chancellorsville, during the Wilderness Campaign and Petersburg, later planned and organized hospitals and libraries. Rare A.D.S. 1p. 12mo., [n.p., n.d.] but ca. 1862-1863], to Hon. Owen Lovejoy, M. C., in full: "Respectfully returned with the information that no sufficient cause of discharge exists for this man as he will be fit for duty in three weeks. Jno S. Billing Ass't. Surg USA in Charge". Billings had joined the U. S. Army Medical Department in 1862 and was duly commissioned first lieutenant and assistant surgeon. For more than a year, he served in military hospitals of Washington and for some months at the United States General Hospital in Philadelphia. On Mar. 31, 1863 he was transferred to the field service and assigned to the 5th Corps of the Army of the Potomac. Near fine condition.
