Description:

JOHN SEDGWICK
(1813 - 1864) Union major general wounded at Antietam and Glendale, fought at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, killed by a sharpshooter while claiming the Confederates wouldn't be able to hit an elephant at such a distance. Fine content A.L.S. 3pp. 4to., ‘Fort McHenry Md', Jan. 17, 1854, on lined blue letterhead to an unnamed colonel. In part: ‘…I herewith enclose a list of Articles left by you…I left some few of the articles go for a price less than you put [?] them, as the officers thought they would not bring as much if sold at Auction…The loss of the San-Francisco is the all assuming topic, and the conduct of Colonel Gates, is commented upon with much severity, that he can give a satisfactory reason for leaving his Troops in the first draft appears to be most desirable for his own honor, and the credit of the service. The news this morning of the loss of Mr. Chan and her son…dear to us all. Gen'l Buckhead [?] has assumed command of this Dept. [but] has not distinguished himself…Capt. Jack Davis died yesterday in Washington…'. Sedgwick concludes his letter with a list of the articles sold, which include a looking glass, crockery, furniture, and so forth. Folds, else very good.
