Description:

(JOHN SCHOFIELD)
GEORGE W. SCHOFIELD (1833-1882) Civil War brevetted Brigadier General and brother of John Schofield, committed suicide. Superb content A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Fort Sill [?], Dec. 24, 1879, on black-bordered mourning letterhead to William Conant Church, the publisher of the Army and Navy Journal. Schofield writes an angry letter bashing the Journal for reporting on his 1879 court martial while on service in the Indian Wars. In part: "...I feel compelled after full deliberation, to refer to your remark in the 'Journal'...in column headed 'The Line' under '10th Cavalry' and 'General Court Martial'. It is assumed that neither of you were present at Riley during the trials, that you had no correspondent there, and that you have not since read the whole record...If these assumptions are correct, how were you able to say 'but the whole gist of the cases is summed up in the remarks of the Department Commander' &c. Had you printed it, the gist of the cases is probably, or even seems to be, summed up, there would have been less ground for offense...It is plain that your knowledge of the cases is derived wholly from the order promulgating there. The harm, if any, is done, and no remedy can be applied...". Ironically, Schofield was court-martialled for faking a knee injury to avoid court martial duty! Initially, his brother John quashed the charges but Gen. John Pope - no fan of the Schofield brothers - had them reinstated. This attack on his honor wore on George, and contributed to his suicide a few years later. Near fine.
