Description:

(1833 - 1887) Confederate major general who led cavalry in Price's raid in Missouri, wounded and captured at Marais des Cygnes, and while a prisoner became the last Confederate promoted to major general. Rare war-date A.L.S. adding rank as brigadier general, 2pp. 8vo. with docketed integral leaf, Camden, Ark., Mar. 12, 1864 to Missouri Confederate Gov. Thomas C. Reynolds, then in Texas. In part: "...I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter...It is probable that I may be able to visit Texas soon, when I can confer with you on Mo. affairs...Everybody is talking about Sherman's defeat - probably it is true. You are right [our?] movements are too much known. Secrecy & rapidity of movement are very important points in any campaign and essential to success. I appreciate & thanks you for your flattering accommodation of me for promotion. I will endeavor to deserve it..." Margin of the integral leaf is laid to a heavy stock backing, not affecting any text, else fine. Sherman had been stymied by Forrest's determined assault on the forces of William Sooey Smith, halting Sherman's advance at Meridian...which he burned to the ground. Six days after he wrote this letter, Marmaduke's men were engaged at Poison Spring. They were later accused of murdering African-American soldiers of the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry. Marmaduke and other white officers claimed that the accusations of illegal killings were overblown, and blamed any murders that may have happened on the Choctaw troops who, in the words of one Confederate, did "kill and scalp some" of the black troops.
