Description:

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS AND LOUISA ADAMS
JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1767 - 1848) Sixth President of the United States, Secretary of State under Monroe, principally formulated the Monroe Doctrine. Great content partly-printed D.S., 1p. folio, Quincy, Ma., Nov. 26, 1844. Adams and his wife, former first lady LOUISA CATHERINE ADAMS (1775–1852) sign a deed between themselves and the Old Colony Railroad Corporation to sell the latter firm several small tracts of land permitting the railway to construct a line through a parcel of the Adams' lands, apparently in Braintree. At bottom, the former president engrosses the document with five words in his hand and adds his signature 'J. Q. Adams'. Beneath his signature, Mrs. Adams signs 'L.C. Adams'. Also included is a small survey showing the path of the rail line through one of the parcels of land, dated Sep. 18, 1844. The document bears a few archival repairs to fold splits, one of which shows a minimal loss at the top margin, else very good condition. Adams also recorded the sale in his diary early the following year. The Old Colony Railroad operated a major network in southeastern Massachusetts and parts of Rhode Island from 1845 to 1893, connecting cities including Boston, Plymouth, Fall River, and New Bedford. It also operated steamboat and ferry lines, including those of the Fall River Line with express train service from Boston to its wharf in Fall River where passengers boarded luxury liners to New York City.
