JOHN PEMBERTON
(1727-1795) Quaker preacher arrested in Philadelphia in 1777 by order of the Continental Congress and sent in exile to Virginia because of his opposition to the American War of Independence. He was officially granted a pardon by the intervention of George Washington in 1778. Uncommon A.L.S. "Thy Loving Kinsman, John Pemberton" 1p., small 4to., Philadelphia, Dec. 19, 1761, to his cousin "Samuel Smith at Burlington", the noted Pennsylvania historian and politician. An emotional letter informing his cousin of the death of his sister-in-law, in which Pemberton relates, in part: "...Our Dear Relation Thy Brother John's [Smith] Wife [Hanna, daughter of Chief Justice James Logan] finished her course here...She lay several hours insensible of much pain as we apprehend, & without taking notice of any thing, & went off very quiet....It would be particularly acceptable to him [John ]to have thyne & wifes, & cousin Betty's Company if your health permitt, tho' he wd. not have you run any imprudent risque...." He adds in the left vertical margin: "Peter Feason's Company is particularly desired". Normal toning, with chipping at edges and mounting strip at one margin.
