Description:

JOHN PEGRAM
(1832 - 1865) Confederate brigadier general killed at Hatcher's Run within two weeks of being married (with the funeral taking place in the same church as the marriage). Rare fine content and association L.S. as Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith's chief of Staff, 1p. oblong 8vo. 'Hd. Qrs. 2nd Army of Ky near Point Lick Creek [ky]', Oct. 14, 1862 in pencil to colonel and future Major Gen. JOSEPH WHEELER (1836-1906), a brilliant cavalry officer who raided Rosecrans at Chattanooga and harassed Sherman's army through Georgia and the Carolinas. In part: '...Genl. [John P.] McCown commands one Division in this Army. He is now near here en route for 'Big Hill'. There is no Cavalry now at Fishers Ford. Col. [John Hunt] Morgan reports that all the forces of the enemy have left the vicinity of Lexington & retired toward Frankfort. He further reports that he thinks there is a general retreat toward Louisville. You would be doing good service to this portion of this Army by fishing[?] out the truth or falsity of this...' Folds, else near fine. Morgan was right - the federals were indeed retreating. Although Buell succeeded in driving Bragg out of Kentucky, his failure to achieve a decisive victory in battle or effectively pursue the Confederate army during its retreat ended his military career. President Lincoln removed Buell from command of the Army of the Ohio for being too cautious in pursuit of Bragg, replacing him with Major General William Rosecrans.
