Description:

JOHN P. MCCOWN
(1815-1879) Confederate brigadier general, defended New Madrid from a siege by Pope, then commanded the Army of the West and became part of Hardee's Corps. Relieved of his command in April 1863 when tried and found guilty of disobedience, and sentenced to suspension from duty for a period of six months. McCown rejoined, defended the Catawba River, and was paroled after the war. Rare war-date manuscript L.S. ‘J. McCown' 1p. 4to., ‘Head Quarters Fort Pillow', July 11, 1861, to the adjutant general of the Army, in part: ‘…I would earnestly call the attention of the General Commanding the Army to the necessity of extending the Telegraph to this point. The Force at Randolph could then in case of an attack be in constant communication with its advanced position. The distance as the ‘Crow Flies' cannot be over eight miles. I think eight miles of wire would cover the distance…Will this post be dependent on Randolph for supplies or shall the Quarter Master and his commissary make their requisition upon Memphis…'. At the time of this letter, McCown was in charge of an infantry brigade under Gideon Pillow. Light chipping to right edge, somewhat fragile, otherwise very good.
