Description:

(1822 - 1901) Union brigadier general engaged at Second Bull Run, Chantilly, and Winchester. A Medal of Honor recipient for gallantry at the Battle of South Mountain. Later he became a department commander in the South. War-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., New York, Oct. 4, 1862, to Major General James D. Morgan. In part: ‘...Capt. John D. O'Brien the senior captain of the 24th N.Y. Regiment, has served...in all the late battles. He commanded his Regiment in the bloody battle fought August 30th after the fall of the gallant Major Barry. He commanded at South Mountain and Antietam...unfortunately lost his leg. It was my intention to have recommended him to fill Major Barry's vacancy...Now that he will be forced to leave the service, there is another reason that induces me to ask that he may be promoted...that he may obtain from the government the [?] of a major general instead of that of a captain...' Signed at the conclusion as brigadier general. Mailing folds, else fine.
