JOHN MURRAY, EARL OF DUNMORE
(1730 - 1809) Scottish colonial administrator. Dunmore was named governor of New York in 1770. He succeeded to the same position in the colony of Virginia the following year after the death of Norborne Berkeley, 4th Baron Botetourt. As Virginia's governor, Dunmore directed a series of campaigns against the trans-Appalachian Indians, known as Lord Dunmore's War. He is noted for issuing a 1775 document, Dunmore's Proclamation, offering freedom to slaves who fought for the British Crown against Patriot rebels in Virginia. Manuscript D.S.as Governor of New York, 1p. folio parchment, New York, June 28, 1771, a proclamation ordering the survey of 20,000 acres of land in New York, which are to be made into two separate tracts of land. Also signed by ANDREW ELLIOTT (1728–1797), a British merchant and official who served as the Acting and last British Governor of New York in 1783. Wrinkled at upper-left, some largely marginal staining and folds, else very good.
