Description:

(1785 - 1861) Associate Justice of the Supreme Court who dissented in the Dred Scott decision, and twice attempted to win the presidency. Fine political content A.L.S., 4pp. 4to., Frankfort, May 30, 1835 to JOHN BRANCH (1782–1863) U.S. Senator, Secretary of the Navy, the 19th Governor of the state of North Carolina, and was the sixth and last territorial governor of Florida. Branch resigned as Jackson's Secretary of the Navy as a result of the "Petticoat Scandal" incited by the wife of John C. Calhoun, while McClean had been appointed to the Court by Jackson. In small part: "...When I arrived at Washington, I found that the efforts of the leading friends of [Henry] Clay and [Daniel] Webster were making, to keep the question of the presidency open...now that Mr. Webster is in the field, his friends in Massachusetts speak, in confident terms, of his remaining there. It is not probable...he can carry more than the states of Massachusetts and...Vermont-possibly Rhode island, then his strength will end. Mr. Clay is not in the field...he seems indisposed to any effort...friends of Clay and Webster encouraged the movement on White...under the hope he would create such confusion in the Jackson ranks, as to defeat the election of Van Buren and give a chance of success to either Clay or Webster...Van Buren will carry Ohio...against any other person..." Much more. Edge wear and tear costs a few letters of text, overall very good.
