Description:

JOHN MCARTHUR, MICHAEL K. LAWLER, AND WILLIAM P. BENTON
Rare grouping of Union generals signatures on a war-date document, 1p. legal folio, [n.p., n.d., undoubtedly written in the field during the war]. The document is a manuscript petition recommending Sgt. William Rowley of the 1st U.S. Infantry for promotion to Second Lieutenant. Rowley's extensive battle experience is listed, including combat at Wilson's Creek, New Madrid, Island No. 10, and Corinth. The petition is signed at bottom by seven officers, including Gen. JOHN MCARTHUR (1826-1906), Union brigadier general, and one of the ablest commanders in the western theater. Wounded at Shiloh, he led his brigade at Fort Donelson, Corinth, and Fort Blakely; MICHAEL K. LAWLER, (1814-1882) Union brigadier general, saw action at Fort Donelson, Port Gibson, Vicksburg, and in the Red River Campaign, and WILLIAM P. BENTON (1828-1867), Union Brigadier General who served with distinction at the Battles of Port Gibson, Jackson (where he was wounded), Champion Hill, Big Black River, and at the Siege of Vicksburg. Wrinkled a bit, else very good.
