Description:

(1820-1906) Union brigadier general who fought with distinction at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Chickasaw Bayou, and in the siege of Vicksburg, later a postbellum Senator and Governor of Nebraska. War date A.L.S. as brigadier general, 1p. 4to., Headquarters Army of the Mississippi, February 1863, to an unnamed colonel requesting permission for his acting quartermaster to go to Memphis to refill his stores. An E.S. written across the body of the letter granting permission is signed by JOHN A. RAWLINS (1831-1869), Union brigadier general, a close friend and Chief of Staff for Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, and later Secretary of War during Grant's presidency. Kirby Smith at Jenkins Ferry. Slightly toned with minor tears along creases which have been repaired on the verso with tape, else fine. A good grouping of generals.
