JOHN M. SCHOFIELD
(1831-1906) Union major general who led a corps at Kennesaw Mountain, at Atlanta, and defeated Hood at Franklin. War-date A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Springfield, MO, Feb. 4, 1863, to a provost marshal, Maj. J. O. Culver. In full: ‘Lieut. Col. J. A. Sentzler, 6th Mo. Cavalry, is on detached service as Provost Marshal Genl, and is therefore entitled to pay on his account – separate from his regiment. If you can pay him before he leaves Springfield you will save the necessity interfering with the discharge of his proper duties.' He boldly signs ‘J M Schofield' in black ink at the conclusion, adding his rank ‘Maj Genl'. Below, the aforementioned Lt. Col. Sentzler endorses the request, asking Maj. Culver to do likewise. Shows original mailing folds, with a small area of rodent damage in the lower right of the text repaired on the verso with paper, otherwise in very good condition. Sold with a period engraving of Schofield, with his facsimile signature beneath the portrait.
