JOHN M. GLOVER ORDERS NO BURNING OF BUILDINGS IN ROLLA, MO.
Union colonel, organizer and commander of the 3rd Missouri Cavalry. Fine content war-date A.L.S., 3pp. 4to., Rolla, Aug. 28, 1862. Much military business, includes orders on preparing interim muster and pay rolls, discussion of men who had left a local hospital for St. Louis and the importance of the proper issuance of certificates of disability. He also orders: "...Your instructions...as regards the destruction of buildins &c. I think conflicts with orders from the War Dept...unless they are being used as defensive instruments at the time of their destruction...you may collect all the contraband property you can...". Small hole in blank area on last page, mounting tape in margin, else very good. Many residents of Rolla leaned toward the Confederacy during the war and the town was taken by Union forces in June 1861. Rolla was also the location of Camp Glover and Camp Davies.
