(1756 - 1814) Revolutionary War brigadier general, served as a captain under Wayne on the Canadian frontier in 1776, gained such a reputation for skill and courage that Washington personally made him a Brigadier General in the Continental Army. Lacey also commanded the American forces in the battle of Crooked Billet. Very rare, fine content war-date A.L.S. “John Lacey” with holograph address leaf, , 2pp. 8vo., 'Camp Trenton', Aug. 26, 1780, to William Moore, Vice-President of Pennsylvania. In part, with numerous misspellings: "...a certain Henry Thomas has been taken up in New Jersey on suspition of being a bad man, and he seams to be such -- he pled when he was apprihended that he was a subject of Pennsylvania, and in consiquence of which he was sent to us...I found he was very well know boath as a Horse Theaf, a Gambler, a pick pocket, and every think else that is bad -- he seams to be an old and a notorious villain...a reward is had for the apprehending of him. The President thinks it is most proper this fellow should be sent to Phila where his villainy is best known-- and has directed me to Order him and under a guard to your care and begs you to send him to Goal till his accusiors can appear against him…" Some moderately toned spots with a clean, repaired fold split bisecting signature, silked for preservation, still very good.
