(JOHN JACOB ASTOR) ROBERT STUART
(1785 - 1848) American explorer, an Irish immigrant and a founder of Astoria, OR, while partnering with John Jacob Astor. He and his party of five set out in June, 1812 to cross the continent from the West Coast, arriving in St. Louis in May, 1813, the third party ever to accomplish the feat. In 1819, he moved to Mackinaw and traded for the American Fur Company, later appointed by President Harrison as commissioner for all the Indian tribes of the northwest. Very rare partly-printed D.S. as Agent for the American Fur Co., 5 1/2" x 2 1/4", [Upper Michigan], July 11, 1822, a chit issued to a baker for having baked 200 loaves of bread for "mechanics & men". Light soiling, else very good.
