JOHN J. PERSHING (1860 - 1948) American general "Black Jack" Pershing commanded troops sent to capture Pancho Villa, and later was Commander in Chief of all American forces in Europe in World War I. Fine content and association T.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Paris, June 22, 1937, on American Battle Monument Commission letterhead to acclaimed Marines Corps general John A. Lejeune, begging his attendance at a ceremony honoring the final - and bloodiest - battle of World War I, the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. In part: "...No doubt you have received the cable...extending you an invitation to be present...at the unveiling of the monument we have erected in Montfaucon. But that does seem enough in your case because of your distinguished service in the A.E.F. I am therefore sending you this note hoping to induce you to come over for the ceremony if at all possible. If you could realize the personal satisfaction it would give me to have you present with others who held important positions in the army during those grueling days of the Meuse-Argonne battle, I am sure your wish to be here would be all the greater...". The Meuse-Argonne offensive was considered the greatest victory for the A.E.F., in which 27,000 soldiers were killed, and thousands more wounded. Nine divisions of troops were led by Pershing in the intense battle which ended on November 11, now Armistice Day, and it brought an end to World War I. Lejeune had already made history during the war by being the first Marine to lead an Army division. Promoted to lieutenant general in 1914, Lejeune led the Army's 2nd Infantry Division through several key victories, including Meuse-Argonne.
