Description:

(1860 - 1948) American general "Black Jack" Pershing commanded troops sent to capture Pancho Villa, and later was Commander in Chief of all American forces in Europe in World War I. Important content and association T.L.S. on A.E.F. letterhead, 1p. 8vo., "France", Mar. 20, 1919, marked "Personal" and sent to Gilbert F. Close, Woodrow Wilson's private secretary, then in Paris. In part: "...I have your letter of March 15th, also the copy of President Wildon's address to Congress and wish to thank you...Will you please express to Mr. [Charles] McAlpin [President of Princeton University] my sincere thanks and appreciation for this act of courtesy..." Fine. At this point in time, Wilson was himself in Europe - from December, 1918 until the summer of 1919. The speech which McAlpin had forwarded to Close and thence to Pershing was almost certainly Wilson's "14 Points" speech from January, 1918 in which the president laid out his plans for the League of Nations, and end to dangerous alliances, and means to avoid future international wars.
