JOHN J. ABERCROMBIE
(1798 - 1877) Union brigadier general, commander of the IV Corps' 2nd Brigade, attached to the Army of the Potomac. He led the brigade throughout the Peninsula Campaign in 1862, wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines. During the Battle of Malvern Hill, his command assisted in repulsing the Confederate attack against Union forces. War-date L.S., 1p. 4to., White House, Va, June 2, 1864 to Gen. Henry W. Halleck. In part: '...I have the honor to report [my] arrival here...I found General Ames Brigade...whom I released today, I also found instructions from General Grant to retain such troops as I might deem necessary for the protection of the Depot...we will have the [telegraph] line in working order sometime tomorrow...the rails have been taken up, and the ties destroyed between West Point and the Chickahominy. There are 600 rebel prisoners at this place - but no blanks to enroll them. Heavy firing in front until dark all day...' Expertly inlaid, fine.
