Description:

JOHN HUNT MORGAN
(1825-1864) Confederate brigadier general known for cavalry raids in Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio, killed in action near Greenville, Tenn. Excessively rare war-date partly-printed D.S. 'Jno. H. Morgan Brig. Genl.', 1p. 11 x 8 in., Atlanta, ca. Mar. 2, 1864, a 'Requisition for Forage for Public and Private Horses, Mules and Oxen, in the service of the Confederate States', specifically 30 rations for two horses, including fodder and corn. Trimmed closely at bottom, else very good. These were difficult times for the valiant Morgan. His raids of this season were in risky defiance of a strategic situation in the border states that had changed radically from the year before. U.S. Army defense of this region, long denied to major Confederate armies, had progressed so that even highly mobile raiders could no longer count on easily evading them, more so as Morgan was now leading inexperienced, marauding troops.
