Description:

JOHN HUNT MORGAN
(1825-1864) Confederate brigadier general known for cavalry raids in Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio, killed in action near Greenville, Tenn. Excessively rare A.E.S. on the verso of an extremely interesting content and association, war-date letter, 1p. legal folio, ‘Near Celina', TN, April 15, 1863, from Maj. Washington G. Owen, commanding the 10th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry. Owen writes to Morgan, discussing recently exchanged prisoners of war, in full: ‘Capt. Winstead of this command has just arrived from ‘Johnsons Island' [Ohio] on exchange & informs me that there is some 150 or 160 of our men now at Tullahoma (recently exchanged). If you see proper to order them to this place you will confer a great favor, as we can easily mount them in this country. In the party is a certain A W Ray formerly a Capt in this Regt who shortly after our return from Ky deserted & carried off some 8 or 10 men and 400 dollars Regimental money. By having him arrested and rigidly watched or guarded until charges &c can be made out & forwarded you will great oblige Very Respectfully Your Obdt Svt'. Owen signs at the conclusion in black ink and adds a postscript discussing the movements of a wagon train. On the verso, Morgan pens his endorsement ‘Respectfully forwarded' and signs ‘Jno H Morgan' in black ink, adding his rank ‘Brigd Gen'. Morgan's endorsement and signature are a tad light, and the letter shows original mailing folds, slightly ragged at the right edge where detached from another sheet, otherwise in very good to fine condition overall. The 10th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry was organized behind Federal lines during the spring and summer of 1863 and saw action in Kentucky and Tennessee, acting as a guide for Morgan on his raids into Indiana and Ohio.
