Description:

JOHN HOWARD
(1912 - 1999) British Army officer who led the glider-borne assault on two bridges between Benouville and Ranville in Normandy on D-Day, the former later became known as 'Pegasus Bridge'. Lot of two signed items, includes a wonderful T.Ms.S., 1p. 8vo., Guildford, Dec. 18, 1996, in part: '...when...[my] glider touched down at the bridge now called PEGASUS...I was particularly conscious of the safety of my wonderful troops, and well aware of the importance of capturing the bridge, and another bridge 400 metres away, INTACT. Both bridges were known to have been prepared for demolition by the enemy...The key hope...was would our specially selected Glider Pilots get us down safely near our targets...to get the full surprise...the enemy had started putting anti-air landing poles on our intended landing zones...[and] standing to with machine guns...They could wipe out a glider load of 30 fighting men before we had a chance to fire back...4 of the 6 Horsa gliders were landed...precisely where planned, and both bridges were captured INTACT within 15 minutes...' Sold with the letter of transmittal which also states that illness had prevented him from attending the annual Normandy events and remarking that his German-made Audi (which firm used slave labor during the war!) was thankfully built like a 'tank', saving him in a recent car wreck. Two pieces.
