Description:

JOHN HANCOCK
(1737-1793) American Revolutionary politician and first signer of the Declaration of Independence, President of the Continental Congress and two-time Governor of Massachusetts. Very rare signed book: 'Dr. Wigglesworth's Lectures on the on the Imputation of Adam's First Sin To His Posterity' (Boston: F. Draper), 1738. 90pp. 8vo., paperback and bound together with string. Hancock signs the half-title page at the top right in full in a nice, neat hand. A most outstanding relic tying together two significant voices on religious and political liberty and toleration in America. EDWARD WIGGLESWORTH (1963-1765) The first Professor of Divinity to be commissioned in the American Colonies, held the Hollis Chair of Divinity at Harvard, and was a critical voice on religious and political toleration. During his time there were radical tendencies from all sides and Wigglesworth urged for moderation among revivalists, understanding one's view of free will could impact their view on a nation's responsibility for religious liberty. The Harvard Professor still held his position during Hancock's time there molding his young impressionable mind with similar views that stayed with him throughout his life. This specific copy was likely the original property of Rev. John Hancock the Elder. The young John Hancock, also America's Founding Father, enrolled at Harvard in 1750 and was likely given his father's library at that time. The signature is a clear early example from the three lines seen under his name, which was later replaced by his well-known flourish. Accompanying his name is the trimmed date '175', almost assuredly for sometime between 1750-1754 (his years at Harvard). The cover bears a large 'D', believed to be int he hand of Hancock or his father. A beautifully made copy with woodcut initials, bearing some light and expected soiling on the half-title page. Unfortunate trimming has affected the date, though, the signature remains untouched, with the text throughout appearing crisp and bright.
