(1831 – 1906) Union brigadier general who served in Sherman's Georgia campaign, twice wounded. Good political content A.L.S. as New York congressman, 1p. 8vo., Washington, D.C., March 27, 1884, to a George Innis. In part: ‘...[Chester] Arthur has made a good President, and has given the Country the cleanest, and best Administration since that of Lincoln. Businessmen of every shade of political opinion concede this. In my judgment we should send unpledged men to Chicago – have them free to act for the best interests of the [Republican] party…' He signs ‘J H Ketcham' in black ink at the conclusion. Shows original mailing folds, with archival tape mounting remnants to the verso, otherwise in fine condition. Sold with the original transmittal envelope. Chester Arthur would lose the 1884 Republican primary to James G. Blaine, who would in turn lose the subsequent general election to Democrat Grover Cleveland.
