Description:

JOHN H. KELLY
(1840 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general, the youngest to be appointed to that rank, promoted for gallantry at Shiloh, led a brigade at Chickamauga, mortally wounded at Franklin. Very rare, fine association war-date A.E.S. on the verso of an A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Tunnel Hill, GA, Jan. 19, 1864, from JOHN WARREN GRIGSBY (1818-1877), colonel of the 6th Kentucky Cavalry and later chief of staff to Gen. Joseph Wheeler's cavalry corps. Grigsby writes to a captain and assistant adjutant general of the 4th division, certifying that orders issued by the headquarters of his cavalry corps have been carried out by his regimental commanders. He signs ‘J. Warren Grigsby' at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank ‘Col Comd'g', and executes his surname a second time ‘Hd Qtrs Grigsby's Brigade' at top as part of the address. On the verso, Kelly pens his endorsement ‘Respectfully forwarded' and signs ‘J. H. Kelly' in black ink, adding his rank ‘Brig Gen'l Comdg'. The letter shows original mailing folds, is slightly toned at the edges, and shows a very small area of paper loss at the top left corner, mentioned only for accuracy, otherwise in fine condition overall.
