JOHN H. H. WARD
(1823 - 1903) Union brigadier general who led the 38th New York at Bull Run, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, where he was wounded. He is also remembered as being removed from command by Winfield Scott Hancock during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House under charges of ‘misbehavior and intoxication in the presence of the enemy during the Battle of the Wilderness'. Fine content war-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., New York, Jan. 28, 1861 to Adjutant General John Meridith Read, Jr. In part: ‘…Not having the honor of a personal acquaintance, yet believing my name is not unknown to you, I have taken the liberty to address you on the matter pertaining to our militia…relative to Staff duties. Mr. McClenachan[?] of this city has been for some time acting in the capacity of Mil: Sec'y to the Col, with the assimilated rank of Lieut. He has had no commission, however, yet his duties are more arduous than that of any member of staff…The Comm in Chief is entitled to a Mil Secy, why not a colonel among the amendments to be proposed to the Militia Laws…'.
