(1790-1856) American politician and Secretary of War under Jackson, embroiled in the ‘Petticoat Affair' for his alleged involvement with Peggy Timberlake before the death of her husband. A pair of A.Ls.S.: the first 1p. 4to., Washington, Nov. 23, 1827, to an unnamed recipient. In part: ‘…Mr. Biddle at Nashville gave me two papers. I had understood that they were both for Phila, & to be left at Cincinnati…I know not what the package contains…but for it's…directed to you as Cashier, am apprehensive that it may contain money…'. Folds, light toning otherwise very good. With an A.L.S. 1p. 4to., ‘War Dept.', May 25, 1836, to an unnamed gentleman, in part: ‘…Funds cannot be placed in the hands of Col. Pratt (pay master), until his bond he signed & approved. He has been instructed to have it executed…and certified by the District Judge…In the meantime, a check is sent to you….'. Folds, tape repair to bottom margin affecting nothing, very good. Two pieces.
