Description:

JOHN H. CLARKE
(1857-1945) Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1916-1922. Scarce A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., [n.p.], ‘Christmas Morning 1923', on University Club letterhead to a Mr. Holl, in part: ‘…I cannot tell you how your kind message pleases me & gives me heart to go on. I have not been as well as usual for a few days and thus much of the depression of spirit which comes with the Christmas season are to one quite alone in the world renders your cheering message very grateful. I have re-read Prometheus this morning by way of disciplining a restless if not rebellious spirit…'. Clarke's years on the Supreme Court were in fact sad: after acting as a trial judge for years, he disliked the monotonous routine of the proceedings as much as the arguments and need to consider others' opinions. Further, his poor relationship with James McReynolds colored his feelings towards tenure, and led to his decision to leave the Court after a very brief stint there. Very good condition.
