753. JOHN GEARY & JOHN HARTRANFT. JOHN W. GEARY (1819-1873) Union brigadier general who commanded a division at Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, Lookout Mountain, and in Sherman's March to the Sea. He was later Military Governor of Savannah, and JOHN F. HARTRANFT (1830-1889) Union major general who received a Medal of Honor for his bravery at Bull Run. Unusual Civil War related partly-printed D.S. "Jno. W. Geary" as Governor and by "J.F. Hartranft" as Auditor General, 1p, oblong folio, Pennsylvania, January 1, 1872. A "Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Certificate of Adjudicated Claim for War Damages," No. 2984, issued to Abraham Hess, acknowledging his "registered claim for the sum of Three Hundred and Ninety One 21/100 Dollars as adjudicated under the act entitled 'An Act to authorize the liquidation of damages sustained by citizens of Pennsylvania during the late rebellion,' and payable only when said claims shall be paid by the United States government." Elaborate engraved vignette at head depicting William Penn with American Indians and early Pennsylvania settlers. Normal age-toning, otherwise in very good condition. $200-300
