John Francis Mercer 1759-1821) American revolutionary officer, aide-de-camp to Gen. Charles Lee who also led cavalry under the command of Lafayette, resisted the ratification of the Constitution, later became Governor of Maryland. A.L.S. 3pp sm. folio, Sep. 21, 1819 to the Levy Court of Ann Arundel County. Mercer complains that he has been erroneously taxed for two hundred acres of land already sold by him and seeks a refund from the court. Signed twice in full, in text and at conclusion. Chip at upper left affects two or three words, otherwise fine.
