Description:

JOHN F. REYNOLDS AND OTHER UNION GENERALS
(1820 - 1863) Union major general who fought at Mechanicsville and Gaines Mill, killed by a sharpshooter while leading his men on the first day at Gettysburg. Rare war-date A.E.S. on the verso of a letter of Lt. Col. R. H. Richardson, Sharpsburg, Oct. 8, 1862 to N.Y. Gov. Edwin D. Morgan recommending five men for promotion. On the verso Reynolds writes: 'Hd Qrs. 1st Army Corps Oct. 9, 1862 Appd & Respy fwd John F. Reynolds Brig. gen. Vols Comdg'. On the same page also appears: an A.E.S. of Brigadier General JAMES B. RICKETTS (1817-1887) who fought at Antietam and Petersburg, also approving and forwarding the document; Brigadier General JAMES A. HARDIE (1823-1876), a McClelland and Burnside staff officer who forwards the document to the Governor, and Bvt. Brigadier General PETER LYLE who sends the document to Ricketts. Very good.
