Description:

(JOHN F. KENNEDY ASSASSINATION)
A chilling relic from the assassination of President John F. Kennedy: a .5 in. x .25 in. piece of the blue leather seat upon which he and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy sat when Lee Harvey Oswald pulled the trigger on his Carcano rifle, tragically ending the young president's life. Accompanied by a copy of a letter of provenance on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Nov. 22, 1982 (twenty years after the assassination), written by White House Technical Service Representative F. Vaughn Ferguson. Ferguson, whose involvement with the limousine before and after the shooting is well-documented, writes in part: '...The leather, light blue and dark blue, is from the automobile in which John F. Kennedy, President of the United States, was assassinated on November 22, 1963...Four days after the assassination the White House upholsterer and I removed this leather at the White House. The light blue leather is from the center of the rear seat...' Ferguson then describes the extensive modifications made to the vehicle after the assassination so that it could be used by President Lyndon B. Johnson, and mentions that he drove the vehicle from Cincinnati to Washington in complete secrecy to avoid the press. He concludes: '...My career at the White House spanned a twenty-year period...It was so sad...'. Also included is a copy of a color photograph showing Ferguson signing the letter of provenance. Fine condition.
