JOHN DOUGHTY
(1754 - 1826) Revolutionary War officer, an aide to Philip Schuyler, later assigned to command the New York company of artillery in March 1777. Participated in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, Springfield, and Yorktown. Appointed fort major for the West Point garrison in 1782 and later dispatched by Washington to the frontier to negotiate with the Choctaw Nation for trading post sites in 1789. He repelled with serious losses an attack by Cherokee, Shawnee, and Creek Indians while leading a detachment up the Tennessee River. Scarce A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Morristown, July 27, 1810, commercial content discussing logging and deficiencies of timber which had been delivered to him. Some marginal tape stains at left, else generally very good.
