Description:

JOHN DILLINGER POLICE INVESTIGATIVE CARD: 'DEAD BY LEAD'
JOHN DILLINGER (1903 - 1934) American bank robber and murderer, in 1933 and 1934 he and his gangs undertook a string of bank robberies in the Midwest, with narrow escapes from the law. His first robbery in 1924 led to a nine year stint in prison. He was caught and imprisoned until 1933 and, after a jailbreak, resumed robbing banks until gunned down by the FBI as he exited a Chicago theater, betrayed by the infamous 'Lady in Red'. Very rare period police investigative card, 2pp. 5 x 3.25 in., a pre-printed card bearing a printed bust portrait photograph of Dillinger on recto, the verso bearing his name, aliases ('John Hall, Johnnie Lawrence'), physical characteristics, occupation (auto mechanic), fingerprint characteristics, and 'Remarks Bank robber, killer'. Following his death, another note was added: 'Dead by lead 7/22/34 2344 Lincoln Chicago Ill.' Fine condition. It should be noted that police departments of the time often had to rely on printed images of wanted criminals as wire and fax photo technology did not exist.
