JOHN DICKINSON
(1732 - 1808). American revolutionary, Signer of the Constitution and member of the Continental Congress who became famous for his 1767 revolutionary pamphlet ''Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania'' and his "Declaration . . . Setting Forth the Causes and Necessity of Their Taking up Arms". A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Wilmington, Jan. 9, 1808, concerning sums due to him. He lists several debts and concludes: "...From the appearance of alteration in John B''s book, and the unprecedented Largeness of the Payment, I am fully persuaded, that he has committed a fraud...changing the figure 1 into 2...Do let him know, that I shall not permit such a Devide to deprive me of my Right...". Matted with a portrait, very good.
