philanthropist who organized Standard Oil and virtually monopolized the industry until he was forced by a Supreme Court ruling to dissolve the company and break it up into regional producers and refiners. Rare S.P. "John D. Rockefeller" in blue indelible pencil at the bottom of a sharp waist-up portrait of the millionaire seated at a desk, 7" x 10" overall, contained within the book Forest Hill September 26, 1905. This book, a souvenir volume limited to only 425 copies, commemorated a visit on that date by a group to Rockefeller's Cleveland estate, and bears the printed text of his speech welcoming the visitors. It was only after much difficulty that the guests managed to obtain Rockefeller's signature beneath the portraits within. Fine condition, and a terrific item for framing, with color period postcard of the estate.
